Overview
This Master’s in International Health programme from Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) is a flexible programme and can be completed within 1 year (full-time), and up to 5 years (part-time) and as a “blended programme” with online modules, depending on your availability. It consists of a core course, advanced modules, and a research project submitted as a thesis.
You can choose from hundreds of accredited advanced modules from institutes across the TropEd network. This allows you to design a programme that is tailored to your specific wishes and needs. With this variety of modules, the MIH prepares you optimally for your desired field of work -whether that be maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, disaster settings, research, health policy, human resources or another area.
Possible career possibilities having completed the MIH:
- National Representative for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working in the field of international health
- Programme Officer working in international organisations dealing with international health, such as Doctors without Borders, World Vision;
- Policy Adviser working in national organisations or governmental institutes dealing with international health issues
Accreditation
The MIH is organised by KIT Royal Tropical Institute and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and is accredited by the Netherlands-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO).
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Core course: The core course, the Netherlands Course on Global Health and Tropical Medicine (NTC), provides you with basic knowledge on a wide range of topics that you will need to follow the advanced modules and complete your thesis. The course consists of 5 modules.
- Advanced modules: In the advanced modules phase you will deepen your skills and knowledge on selected topics. With support of the course management, you make a personal study plan. The advanced modules can be taken at KIT and at various universities and institutes throughout the Netherlands, within and outside Europe. The availablity of dinstance-based modules (e-learning) will allow you to continue your studies from home or wherever you currently work.

General requirements
- Academic training at least to the level of a bachelor’s degree, either in medicine or a paramedical science like nursing, midwifery or public health. If you have a Bachelor degree in Public Health, Dentistry, Physiotherapy or social science you will need to show proven work experience in health service delivery.
- Two years of relevant work experience, incl. work experience in low and middle income settings
- Proven proficiency in spoken and written English academic TOEFL or IELTS test.
- Computer literacy is expected
- A one-page letter of motivation
- Copies of your diplomas and grade reports
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae and a list of publications if applicable
- Proof of English proficiency (if applicable)
