New York City is now thought to be one of the most linguistically diverse places on earth. Drawing upon this rich linguistic diversity, the Program in Linguistics offers students a wide-ranging curriculum, from introductory courses on theories of grammar to advanced seminars on bilingualism and articulatory phonetics. 


Our faculty teaching and research covers all main subdisciplines within the field, with particular expertise in bilingualism and multilingualism, computational linguistics, endangered languages, historical linguistics, language acquisition, morphology, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, phonetics, phonology, semantics, sentence processing, sociolinguistics, Spanish linguistics, and syntax. Students may choose to enter our Ph.D. program in Linguistics, or our M.A. program, with possible specializations in computational linguistics, endangered languages, historical linguistics, language acquisition, phonology and phonetics, sociolinguistics, Spanish linguistics, or syntax.

  • English as a Foreign Language: An applicant must submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) unless they have a post-secondary degree from an institution in which the language of instruction is English-only and located in a country that recognizes English as an Official Language.
