Transform yourself and experience the healing power of nature with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Transpersonal Wilderness Therapy, an interdisciplinary, multicultural program at Naropa University that prepares you to practice as a psychotherapist in a myriad of settings, both outdoors and within clinical mental health agencies.


In addition to the study of mindfulness and transpersonal psychology, this intensely experiential degree program gives you ten weeks’ direct experience in the wilderness, acquiring outdoor skills along with mental health interventions that incorporate the natural world into the therapeutic relationship.

Naropa University’s Transpersonal Wilderness Therapy alumnx are making their presence felt in a wide-range of settings with diverse populations. As many as one-third of our students receive job offers from their internship placements. Our Transpersonal Wilderness Therapy graduates are working as school counselors, therapists in equine therapy programs, faculty members, addictions counselors, directors of outdoor therapy programs, and individual psychotherapists.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

  • Apply online and pay the $60 nonrefundable application fee. This is the preferred method for applying.
  • An official transcript of a conferred bachelor's degree must be received by the Office of Admissions prior to beginning graduate coursework. 
  • In a three-to-five page double-spaced essay, please respond to the following: How are you prepared to participate in this distinctive community, and how would your life and educational goals be reached by attending the Transpersonal Wilderness Therapy program?
  • Your resume/CV should detail all pertinent academic, employment, and volunteer history with exact dates of participation.
  • Two letters of recommendation are required.
