As a graduate student in Naropa University’s Transpersonal Art Therapy program you will have the opportunity to explore the role of art and creativity in your own life—and how to skillfully use art in the therapeutic relationship.


Naropa University’s Transpersonal Art Therapy program is unique in that you will combine transpersonal psychology with contemplative studies, clinical field work, and civic engagement. The goal is to become a skilled, self-aware, and socially engaged counselor, artist, and art therapist.

Graduates from Naropa’s Transpersonal Art Therapy program have gone on to become art therapists, counselors in private practice, addiction counselors, school counselors, grief counselors, and more.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

General requirements

  • Apply online and pay the $60 nonrefundable application fee. This is the preferred method for applying.
  • An official transcript of a conferred bachelor's degree must be received by the Office of Admissions prior to beginning graduate coursework. 
  • In a three-to-four page typed, double-spaced, 12 point font essay discuss why you are interested in attending the MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Transpersonal Art Therapy program at Naropa University.
  • Your resume/CV should detail all pertinent academic, employment, and volunteer history with exact dates of participation.
  • Applicants are required to submit a well-rounded portfolio of 20 different pieces of original art.
  • Two letters of recommendation are required.
