About

The Islamic Studies programme from Istanbul Sehir University awaits its students with an academic staff featuring prominent names in the fields of contemporary Islamic world and classical Islamic sciences in particular who have embraced an interdisciplinary approach in their research for Islamic studies, evaluates the traditional knowledge in accordance with modern needs by taking into consideration the new developments and processes and promises to provide their students with an efficient and guiding consultancy.

Output of the program

The most significant output of the program is that it makes possible for the students to realize their goal to produce a top quality thesis in their research area. Students completing this program also reach a level where they will be able to correctly read and understand the basic resources of the Islamic sciences, as well as the main examples of the literature belonging to their choice of discipline. 

What’s more, they also gain the skills such as successfully applying the basic research and academic writing techniques. After graduating from this program students will have the basic and even more than that, necessary foundation to receive acceptance from doctoral programs where they will further improve their expertise and generate qualified knowledge.

Although the language of the program is Turkish, Arabic and English materials are also used intensively.

Programme Structure

Program outcomes:

  • Will produce an interdisciplinary knowledge for the classical and modern problems concerning Islamic sciences.
  • Will know the basics of data collection methods from classical and modern sources, analyze the data and interpret them.
  • Will know the emergence of Islamic sciences as a discipline and the dynamics which led to development of them in history.
  • Will be familiar with the works and theories of the classical ulema as well as contemporary scholars.
  • Will have a strong background and imagination which helps to understand problems of the classical ulema in historical contexts
  • Will be familiar with fundamental concepts and discussions in Islamic sciences.
  • Will be able to write an MA thesis using appropriate methods, terms and sources successfully.

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • English or Turkish translation of the high school diploma certified by notary public or by the corresponding Turkish Consular (the original of the diploma and the certificate of equivalency showing its equivalence to Turkish diplomas will be demanded during registration)
  • Transcript (In which all the courses taken and the grades received during high school education are indicated, certified by the school administration and if not in Turkish or English, translated into one of these languages and certified by notary public or by the corresponding Turkish Consular),
