About

The Library and Information Science, Digital Library and Information Services programme of the University of Boras is specifically of interest for those who want to learn more about how modern cultural heritage institutions – primary among them libraries – work with digital tools, services, and material.

Overview

About the Programme

The Library and Information Science, Digital Library and Information Services programme of the University of Boras is interdisciplinary and weaves together two strands: development of concrete skills with digital tools and information and development of an ability to analyze and evaluate digital libraries and digitization.

Each of the first three semesters begins with a voluntary campus week, where students and teachers can come together and get to know one another through participation in workshops and discussions. The first semester involves one 15-point course Digital Library Management, which also serves as an introduction to the main themes of the program. Two 7.5-point computer science-based courses compliment this course (Information Retrieval and Technologies of Digital Libraries 1).

The second semester focuses on a user perspective in two 7.5-point courses (Users in Digital Environments and Interaction Design) alongside the 15-point course Digitizing Cultural Heritage Material. The third semester includes the 7.5-point follow-up courses Information Retrieval 2 and Technologies of Digital Libraries 2, alongside a 15-point Research Methods course.

The final semester is devoted to the Thesis course, which involves an obligatory campus defense.

The program has an international profile, and teaching is conducted in English. The program assists with the development of contacts within the Swedish library world, through inviting working librarians into the digital classroom. Our program also has an international profile. The University of Borås is a member of iSchools, providing additional chances for international networking on top of the international contacts gained through meeting fellow students from all over the world.

A master with a focus on digital libraries and information services prepares students for a newer and growing part of work in all libraries and other areas of employment that demand skill with organizing digital data and materials. Graduates with knowledge of digital tools and information are in high demand.
