Marriage and family therapists provide mental health prevention and clinical intervention services to individuals, couples, families and groups in a variety of settings including community mental health agencies, hospitals, and schools.

As independent mental health practitioners, licensed MFTs can also offer their services through private practice.

Both a master’s degree and a certificate in marriage and family therapy are available. Our master's degree in marriage, couple and family counseling prepares students to sit for dual licensure – both the national licensure exam to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and the national licensure exam to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Oregon. The certificate in marriage, couple and family counseling is open to those who already have a mental health degree.

This degree will prepare you to provide counseling to individuals, couples, families, and groups across the life cycle. You will be able to work in a variety of settings, such as private, institutional, community, Christian, and cross-cultural. You can work in private practice (group or individual), profit and nonprofit organizations, hospitals, schools, etc.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution. A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or above is required. The undergraduate degree does not have to be in the field of psychology.*
