Overview
Throughout the Biomedical Engineering MSc program from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) you’ll acquire knowledge and skills from all fields of biomedical engineering in order to become an expert all-rounder, so once you finish the program, you can work as a generalist or specialist in one particular field. You’ll be trained in the fundamentals of current biomedical engineering and gain a thorough knowledge of the basic concepts, along with an overview of the main applications used in various fields of biomedical engineering: medical imaging, medical signal processing, medical physics, medical device technology, tissue engineering, biomaterials and more. Alongside this knowledge, you’ll acquire the necessary research skills that will allow you to independently analyse and solve problems, with an all-important emphasis on permanent learning in this ever-changing domain.
You can choose between five specialisations:
- Radiation physics
- Biomechanics and biomaterials
- Sensors and medical devices
- Neuro-engineering
- Generic programme

All degree programs offered by VUB are accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO), ensuring that they meet the highest predefined quality standards. Alongside this official quality control system, VUB has an internal Quality Control Commission in charge of permanently monitoring the quality of education.

General requirements
If you have an academic Bachelor's degree in engineering (university level) with specialization in bioengineering or biomedical engineering (university level) you can directly enter the program.
You can also apply if you have an academic Bachelor's degree in engineering or applied sciences (university level) - in this case, your background will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and admission is based on acceptance .
Based on the evaluation, and you might need to follow a preparatory program accounting for approximately 15/18 to maximum 90 ECTS credits, depending on your diploma.
- You will need to upload a motivational letter and 1 recommendation letter
- It is mandatory to submit the result of the Quantitative Reasoning component of the General Test (GRE). The GRE result will be one component in the overall assessment of your application.
