At the Northwest Missouri State University we offer a master degree in Teaching Mathematics. In cooperation with the College of Education and Human Services, an area of concentration in mathematics is provided for teachers to teach mathematics at the high school level.

The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to provide a program through which students experience success in mathematics by learning to interpret, solve and explain mathematical problems.

We offer a master degree in Teaching Mathematics at Northwest Missouri State University. The department also offers general education and service courses to the University that provide students with mathematical knowledge to assist them in their lifelong learning experiences.

Classes in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offer a mix of traditional teaching, inquiry based teaching and dynamic group work in problem solving. Assignments may require a group to write a paper containing their solution and present their solution to the class. Appropriate use of technology, including dynamic presentation software, is encouraged.

The purpose of the program is to help mathematics teachers:

  • Acquire increased competency in a broad spectrum of the mathematical sciences.
  • Develop additional skills and understanding in the art of good mathematics teaching, including teaching special students.
