About

The Liberal Studies program of Clayton State University is designed to meet the needs of persons who have completed the undergraduate degree and who have the ability and the desire to engage in advanced study, but for whom the traditional graduate curricula are too restrictive and specialized.

Overview

Our faculty includes distinguished scholars in the humanities, arts, math and the social sciences, each knowledgeable about the special nature of this flexible, rigorous and individualized program. Thirty-six credit hours of graduate study are required for the degree, including six credit hours applied toward a thesis or a non-thesis option. Students in the program have access to a broad spectrum of course offerings in a variety of disciplines scheduled during days, evenings, and online.

The Philosophy Behind the Degree

The Liberal Studies program of Clayton State University an interdisciplinary program that encourages innovative thought, promotes connections to others, and cultivates analytical reasoning skills, is offered by the College of Arts & Sciences and is designed for many individuals—recent college graduates; professionals in the public and private sectors; current and prospective teachers; lawyers; state workers;  non-profit arts administrators; and private business owners—a diverse group of bright and intellectually curious students of varied interests, ages, and backgrounds who are motivated to learn and who wish to pursue learning with similarly motivated students and faculty members.

Through a challenging, structured liberal arts curriculum, this degree offers graduate students various opportunities:

  • to grow in their awareness of cultural tendencies
  • to cultivate their analytical and communication skills to reach their full potential
  • to develop and expand a commitment to others
  • to attain a liberal studies perspective on contemporary problems and opportunities
  • to broaden their general knowledge and satisfy their intellectual curiosity
  • to strengthen their capacity to think critically and creatively
  • to gain insights into the relationships between disciplines, ideas, and historical developments
  • to prepare for a range of career options and further study
  • to accumulate 18 hours of concentrated graduate coursework in English, History, Math, Philosophy,  or Liberal Arts

With the need for more advanced degrees in all sectors of American professional life, this degree program could not come at a better time in your educational and professional career.
