About

The mission of the School Counseling program is to train Professional School Counselors.  Counselor Education students at Jacksonville State University acquire a foundation in the counseling core and strength in the specialty field courses in program development; consultation and intervention; counseling children and adolescents, and individual and group appraisal.

Overview

Counselor Education students at Jacksonville State University become competent in utilizing the Alabama State Department of Education Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Plan that exemplifies national standards. The focus is to educate school counselors, and enable them to address elementary and secondary student's needs in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development. Teaching, scholarship, and service are values demonstrated throughout the program. Self-awareness, intellectual development, and social consciousness are supported and encouraged.

Student Outcomes

Last year, including Summer 2018, Fall 2018, and Spring 2019, there were 5 graduates of Jacksonville State University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Our graduates consistently achieve higher-than-average pass rates on national counseling examinations. The pass rate for graduates taking the NCE examination in 2018 was approximately 85%. Of the admitted students, 95% graduate from the program in the expected time period and 98% of those program graduates responding to surveys who are actively seeking jobs are employed.

Additionally, last year, including Summer 2018, Fall 2018, and Spring 2019, there were 14 graduates of Jacksonville State University’s School Counseling program. Of the admitted students, 85% graduate from the program in the expected time period, and 95% of those program graduates responding to surveys who are actively seeking jobs are employed as school counselors. Ninety-five percent of all school counseling graduates that employment information is available for are employed in education. One hundred percent of School Counseling graduates passed the Praxis on the first attempt.
