The Early Childhood/Elementary and Special Education Department (EESE) provides undergraduate and graduate programs for students seeking preparation to work with young children in the community, agencies, and preK-12 school settings.


Students seeking credentials to teach individuals in the special education adapted curriculum (severe disabilities) program may earn a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education Adapted Curriculum K-12. Admission requirements are consistent with those of the Graduate Council of Norfolk State University and the admissions committee of the Department. Students must have passing scores on PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators (or equivalent) before taking more than nine credit hours. Students must pass the VCLA to be approved for student teaching.

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • Successful completion of an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Official transcripts sent to the Graduate School (unofficial can be uploaded into the portal)
  • Three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement expounding on the applicant’s interest in the field of study.
  • A portfolio of relevant work experience (with a minimum of five years’ experience in the specific field of study).
