The Nutrition and Food Technology program of the An-Najah National University aims at strengthening academic cooperation with highly recognized international academic institutions and adds international experience to our graduates in the general field of agriculture and the specific fields of nutrition and food science and technology. 

Overview

 Nutrition and Food Technology program of the An-Najah National University aims at providing students with advanced scientific knowledge and research and professional skills needed by the various sectors of the Palestinian and Regional food industries and nutrition-related sectors that ensures maximizing productivity levels and improving human health.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching includes regular lectures (16 actual hours per credit hour) and in class and out of class activity related to each course. Students may be required to make presentations on particular topics determined by the instructor and students which are evaluated and graded by the instructor. Students may also perform study projects, either individually or in groups. In addition to “face to face” meetings, teaching methods may also include online or “Elearning” using Moodle. Several well equipped class rooms and computer labs are available at the faculty of graduate studies to carry out lectures and class work.

Intended Learning outcomes:

  • Acquire advanced knowledge in nutrition, food science and related sciences.
  • Acquire advanced knowledge in functional foods and their effect on human health.
  • Be able to identify and apply national and international rules that protect the population from hazards of food processing and technology.
  • Be able to relate food to nutritional epidemiology, in terms of etiology and manifestation, and design nutritional programs for prevention and treatment.
  • Be able to improve marketing skills based on nutrition consumption patterns and behaviors.
  • The student should be able to demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility and assess the health risks resulting from negligence in this area.
  • Develop knowledge and skills in research methodology, statistical methods and analysis of data and be able to carry out research activity.
  • The student should be able to communicate and work with people from different origins and backgrounds and to provide advice, guidance, and knowledge transfer.
  • Acquire excellent communication skills based on personal experience in different cultures and contribute to international cooperation and understanding.

Career Opportunities

The graduates of the Nutrition and Food Technology program of the An-Najah National University are expected to gain knowledge in nutrition and food science as well as food processes and technologies required for the processing and storage of prepared foods. Graduates of this program would find employment opportunities both within the industry and in the field of human-specific categories, where they are involved in product development, management and quality control and processes. 

They could also be employed in public and private institutions devoted to improve the nutritional characteristics of foods, to improve nutritional health, to carry out analysis of the bioavailability of foods and additives, to develop methods designed to assess the safety of foods and their suitability for human consumption, in consulting firms in the field of human nutrition and, finally, to participate in training, education, research, publicity and publications in the field of nutrition, food processing, quality, and safety. Due to the international nature of this program, and the expected language and communication skills and international experience to be acquired, the graduates of this program would be able to compete for international jobs in the fields specified previously.

General requirements

  • Prospective applicant should have a Bachelor degree from An-Najah National University or its equivalent from a Faculty or university credited by An-Najah National University.
  • A Placement Test for the major he/she is applying to.
  • Prospective applicant should be willing to meet with the Supervising Committee for a personal interview if the Specialised Department Council recommends that.
  • Earning a competitive GPA, is a matter usually determined and computed by the Specialized Department by the following formula: An applicant’s Bachelor’s GPA counts 70% and the applicant’s results on the Skills / Placement Exam and personal interview counts 30%.
  • An original or official transcript or copy of certified from both the university from which the applicant graduated and the Palestinian ministry of higher learning.
  • A certificate of work experience, if available.
  • Two recommendation Letters from faculty members or professionals.
  • Personal photo.
