The Master of Statistics will be gradually offered as Distance Learning (DL) Program at the Hasselt University, next to and in parallel with the on-campus program. Enrolling for the DL Program means that as a student you will take the program from a distance, i.e. from home, workplace or virtually any place with access to the internet.

About

The Master Programme in Statistics by distance learning is offered by the Hasselt University.

The on- and off-campus program will be offered in parallel, synchronized as far as practically feasible, and with maximal flexibility. It will be possible to switch between the on-campus and off-campus programs. The content and learning outcomes within and across courses are identical.

In practice the study load has proven to be too heavy to combine the full-time program (60 credits) with a job. Combining a parttime program of 30 credits with a (parttime) job is expected to be feasible.

Assessment and ExaminationOne of the principles we are bearing in mind when setting up the Distance program is to keep it as close to the On-Campus program as possible, not only its content and teaching methods, but also the way of assessing students. Hence, at this stage of the implementation, examinations will be held for all student on campus. Travel and accommodation expenses are to be fully financed by the student himself, without any exception. Some basic practical assistance (essentially contacts of youth hostels and hotels in the neighbourhood) is offered by our administrative offices.

There are in principle two options. One option is to participate in all exam sessions, after each semester (January and June), and if necessary, in the re-examination period (mid August - first week of September). If not feasible you could opt for the possibility to take all exams in the August-September period. This latter option however is not recommended, as the exam schedule will be very loaded and moreover, this option does not allow you to retake any exam within one academic year.

Programme Structure

The introductory phase provides thorough fundamental knowledge of statistics. Students will become familiar with data, statistical analysis, and, first and foremost, statistical concepts and reasoning. Apart from topic related subjects, such as regression and analysis of variance, a lot of attention is devoted to group based project work.

In the first semester students of Epidemiology & Public Health Methodology and Biostatistics have 5 compulsory subjects, a group project and one optional subject.

The students of Bioinformatics have 6 compulsory subjects and a group project.
