Overview
Students develop skills and theoretical knowledge in practicing individual, group, family and career counseling with diverse populations with a variety of psychological disorders and concerns.
The M.S. program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Southern Connecticut State University is accredited by the Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), which is the premier independent accrediting body in counselor education. A comprehensive exam is required. Students who complete the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling are prepared to take the National Counselor Examination, the exam required by the state of Connecticut for licensure as a professional counselor. This examination is also required for national board certification by the National Board of Certified Counselors.
Graduates with Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Southern Connecticut State University will be able to:
- Understand the multiple professional roles and functions of counselors across specialty areas and the role of the professional counselor advocating on behalf of the profession
- Demonstrate an understanding of ethical standards of professional counseling organizations and applications of ethical and legal considerations in professional counseling
- Explain theories and models of counseling, as well as a systems approach to conceptualizing clients and theories, models and strategies for understanding and practicing consultation
- Apply theories of individual and family development across the lifespan and the systemic and environmental factors that affect human development, functioning and behavior
- Evidence familiarity with and sensitivity to multicultural and characteristics within and among diverse groups, nationally and internationally as well as theories and models of multicultural counseling, cultural identity development, and social justice and advocacy
- Demonstrate an understanding of theoretical foundations of group counseling and group work, dynamics associated with group process and development as well as therapeutic factors and how they contribute to group effectiveness
- Exhibit an understanding of theories and models of career development, counseling and decision making as well as strategies for career development program planning, organization, implementation administration and evaluation
- Integrate the use of assessments for diagnostic and intervention planning purposes, as well as ethnical and culturally relevant strategies for selecting, administering, and interpreting assessment and test results

Applicants should have a strong academic background and/or potential, as evidenced by a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0.
Applicants should have should be strongly recommended by 3 individuals who have known them in a professional and/or academic setting and can speak to their potential as a graduate student and clinical mental health counselor, including an assessment of their interpersonal skills and commitment to diversity.
Applicants should have some experience, either volunteer or professional, in a helping role. These experiences can be described on their resume.
Applicants should demonstrate potential as a professional counselor, including strong interpersonal skills, and knowledge of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling field within an admissions interview, if invited.
