The Master of Arts in Teaching is a professional degree designed for students who want to gain additional knowledge and increase their career options in the teaching field. 


Both North American Division (NAD) and Michigan state certification may be obtained while earning a MAT in elementary or secondary education. Specializations are offered in the secondary content areas.

Typical MAT students belong to one of the following categories:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree and are now seeking teacher certification at the elementary or secondary level.
  • Hold teacher certification at either the elementary or secondary level and seek certification at the other level.
  • Hold a teaching certificate and want to strengthen or add a specific subject area endorsement.

IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

  • A bachelors degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) from an accredited institution and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.60 (applicants with lower GPA may be admitted upon consideration of the composite profile).
  • Two Recommendations from professionals such as advisors, major professors and employers.
  • Resume describing employment, research or special projects.
  • Statement of Purpose reflecting your philosophical perspective, personal, professional and academic goals, and reasons for seeking the graduate program.
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (academic): Students whose language of education is not English must submit English proficiency test scores.
  • If wanting Michigan Certification must have valid teaching license.
