Children cannot succeed in school without proficiency in reading and writing, and the level of literacy they will need to fully participate in society continues to increase. SPU's MEd in Literacy is a rigorous, research-based program designed to equip effective teachers of literacy to meet the needs of a wide range of learners.


The MEd in Literacy provides you with two options. Option one is the MEd in Literacy Plus Reading Endorsement and requires a completed teacher certificate before you begin the program. The second option is the Med in Literacy With Teacher Certification.


SPU is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

                          The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.                           The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level.                         Academic Requirements

                        You need the following GPA score:

                        Required score: 3

                        Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

                        Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

                        You only need to take one of these tests:

                        • *The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or MAT (Miller Analogies Test) will be required if GPA is less than 3.0.

                          This programme accepts GRE® scores and has provided a recommended score range.

                          The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

                        • You need the following GMAT score:

                          Required score: 400

                          The GMAT - or Graduate Management Admission Test - is a frequent requirement for admission at management and business schools across the world. The GMAT score ranges between 200 and 800 and measures the verbal and quantitative reasoning of test-takers.

                        General Requirements

                        • Application and $50 application processing fee.
                        • Copy of current Washington state teaching certificate (not required for Literacy + Certification applicants).
                        • Official transcript documenting bachelor's degree (including official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended).
                        • Personal statement (1–2 pages).
                        • GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or MAT (Miller Analogies Test)scores taken within five years of application.
                        • On the MAT, preferred minimum scaled score of 400.*
                        • Two letters of recommendation.
                        • Moral and Character Fitness Policy form (found in the online application) for those seeking teaching certification.
