The mission of the Mechanical Engineering graduate program from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is to provide students with advanced learning in the areas of thermo-fluid sciences, mechanical systems, or manufacturing/controls. 

Overview

The primary goals of the Mechanical Engineering graduate program from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology are to develop the scholastic ability, independent creativity, and professional competence of the student to a higher level than is possible in an undergraduate program.

Objectives

Through the education offered by the MS/ME program, students will learn:

  • to formulate solutions to mechanical engineering problems using multi-disciplinary approaches
  • to be able to grow professionally and personally
  • to serve their profession and community as valuable contributing leaders

Outcomes

Students undertaking education in MS/ME program are expected to

  • expand their knowledge and understanding of methods and approaches to advancing knowledge in the basic areas of Mechanical Engineering
  • formulate solutions to problems related to thermo-fluid sciences, mechanical systems, or manufacturing/controls
  • be able to conduct basic or applied research and development in Mechanical Engineering
  • become an engineer who will serve their profession and community as valuable contributing leaders

  •  $35.00 application fee, payable online by credit card at the time of application 
  •  Official transcripts from all U.S. institutions attended. Transcripts must be sent directly by the issuing institution. Documents can be sent electronically or by postal mail. Transcripts sent directly by the applicant are not accepted. Scanned copies are not accepted. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is typically required; students with exceptional ability may apply with less than 3.0 GPA. 
  • One page statement of purpose/personal statement of goals and research interests.
  • GRE score report: The South Dakota Mines school code is 6652. A department copy is not required. Scores of 50% or higher are recommended; strong quantitative scores are expected.
