Thesis Option

The Civil and Environmental Engineering program from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology consists of a program of graduate coursework and independent thesis research. Candidacy for the MS CENE degree with the thesis option is contingent upon the student’s aptitude to do research. The thesis must constitute an original contribution to knowledge in Civil and Environmental Engineering and must be successfully defended at a final oral presentation and examination. 

Students are accepted into the MS CENE thesis option upon the successful submission of a written thesis proposal, public presentation, and the recommendation of a major professor.

  • Students are expected to complete a written thesis proposal and present it to their committee at least one semester before defending the thesis.

    •  Official transcripts from all U.S. institutions attended. Transcripts must be sent directly by the issuing institution. Documents can be sent electronically or by postal mail. Transcripts sent directly by the applicant are not accepted. Scanned copies are not accepted. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is typically required; students with exceptional ability may apply with less than 3.0 GPA. 
    • One page statement of purpose/personal statement of goals and research interests.
    • GRE score report: The South Dakota Mines school code is 6652. A department copy is not required. Scores of 50% or higher are recommended; strong quantitative scores are expected.
