Overview
The Classical and Near Eastern Studies program of the University of Minnesota encourages careful reading and writing and will develop your knowledge of history, politics, rhetoric, and research in a small and friendly cohort of students and faculty.

- Religions in Antiquity
The religions in antiquity track is designed for students seeking advanced preparation in the languages, religious texts, and historical cultures of antiquity. As part of a vibrant graduate program in Greek and Latin literature, ancient philosophy, and ancient history, this track offers an exciting intellectual setting in which to undertake advanced studies in religion.
- Classics
Evenly balanced between the study of Greek and Latin language and literature. Students will dive into the framework for how our civilization operates today by exploring these two classic languages and their historical context as the ancestors of drama, rhetoric, romance, poetry, and more.
- Greek
Focuses on Greek language and literature, with a strong emphasis on some additional academic field or topic of your choice and at least two graduate courses in another language.
- Latin
Focuses on Latin language and literature, with a strong emphasis on some additional academic field or topic of your choice and at least two graduate courses in another language.

General requirements
- Personal Statement: about 1-4 pages (single-spaced) addressing both your scholarly and personal experience and proposed course of study
- Writing sample: please submit a writing sample of about 10-25 pages along with your application
- Language Experience: complete the Classical Language Survey form with your previous coursework and reading in Classical or Medieval Greek, Hebrew, or Latin
- Transcripts from all previous colleges attended: unofficial transcripts are accepted. Should you be offered admission, Graduate Admissions will then solicit official transcripts
- Diversity Statement: adiversity statement is only required for those who wish to be considered for the Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) fellowship
- Three letters of recommendation
- The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies requires a recent GRE (within the last 5 years)
- If your native language is not English, you should arrange to take the TOEFL test
