Criminology is the study of crime and its causes as well as its effects and social impacts. Criminologists study crime data to better understand the many causes of crime and to assist criminal justice professionals and officials in implementing the most effective ways to prevent and reduce crime. 

About

The field of criminology is interdisciplinary and draws from a number of other fields including psychology, sociology, biology, economics as well as many others. 

A degree in criminal justice offers a wide range of outstanding professional opportunities and is one of the nation’s fastest-growing academic disciplines. The criminal justice program fosters the necessary skills for careers in the field including critical thinking skills, ethical decision-making, communication skills, quantitative reasoning, an understanding of diversity and technology and computing skills.

With over 30 years of experience, Salem State University’s criminal justice program is well qualified to provide students with the necessary skills for a successful career in this field, advancing the career of current professionals and for entry into graduate school. Our faculty are practitioners in residence who share real-world experience with students. They provide a challenging and intellectually stimulating classroom environment combined with real world experience in the field through supervised internships and service learning options.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • Check your program's application deadline(s), and work backward from the application deadline or start term.
  • Start your online application, so you can receive application reminders and updates.
  • Order your transcripts or transcript evaluation, and begin organizing your references, personal statements, and admissions tests (if required).
  • Submit additional information that your graduate program may require, such as a resume, passing MTEL scores or educator license, or additional writing sample.  
  • Once ALL materials are received, your file will be reviewed by the department. The turn-around time depends on each individual program.
