Literacy Studies - TESOL and Reading program of Arcadia University explores literacy in educational and institutional contexts. The issues of literacy in the PK-12 classroom and the relationship of literacy to social mobility and globalization will be explored.


Literacy Studies - TESOL and Reading program of Arcadia University leads to PA Teacher Certification in Reading Specialist PK-12 certification and English as a Second Language  PK-12 program specialist certification.

Key facts:

  • You can complete the program part- or full-time, with evening classes offered 4:30-10 p.m. Monday through Friday during each 14-16 week semester. There are also a few online courses. Simply choose how many courses you'd like to register for each semester with the help of your academic adviser.
  • Full-time status for graduate students is nine or more credit hours per semester. Most students register for at least two courses a semester, allowing them to complete a master's degree and/or teacher certification within 18 to 24 months.

General requirements

  • A graduate application, including personal statements, to be completed online. Use the following application (please complete application via desktop for a better use experience). 
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a recommended GPA of 3.0 or better. Passing scores on the Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment Tests in Reading, Writing, and Math can be submitted when the GPA is below 3.0
  • Students holding a B.A. or B.S. degree in Education who are seeking an initial teaching certification (Instructional I) must submit passing scores from a provider of one of the approved basic skills assessment tests: PAPA, CORE, SAT or ACT. See Testing Requirements for Candidates with a Degree in Education. 
  • One official transcript from each college, university or professional school attended. 
  • Proof of any Pennsylvania teaching certificates, if applying for an add-on certification program.
