A Master of Science in Reading prepares the educator to become a reading specialist, reading leader, reading coach, or reading resource person who works in the K-12 school environment. This program is state approved and meets the requirements of the Florida reading certification.

Overview

This certification has reciprocity with several states. Current Florida certification credentials are required for admission to the MS in Reading program.

Barry's Reading MS program meets the demand for highly-qualified teachers of Reading. You will find that our graduate reading courses present evidence-based best practices for teaching and learning strategies. Classes are taught in small settings by full-time professors who represent a broad and deep knowledge of reading education.

All courses are offered in the evening. Most courses meet once a week for eight or sixteen weeks. Summer courses meet in a ten or twelve week format.

Most students complete the program in less than two years while continuing to teach.

English Language Requirements

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. General Requirements

  • Successful completion of the required 30 semester-hours including all required courses
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0, "B"
  • Passing the Reading Subject Area specialization of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination, unless already certified in Reading
  • No more than two C grades
  • You must have completed an undergraduate or a graduate course in children / adolescent literature.
