The Department of Theater offers a master of fine arts degree in theater with a concentration in one of the following areas: performing arts management, acting, directing, dramaturgy, or design. The two-year, 60-credit program prepares students for leadership and professional careers in each area of concentration through a combination of practical and theoretical courses as well as through internships with major institutions in the New York metropolitan area.
You will receive rigorous training in acting, design and directing, with many performance opportunities to sharpen your expertise. Our performing arts management program is considered one of the strongest in the country, and our program in theater history and criticism will give you a thorough grounding in scholarship, dramaturgy and theatrical criticism. Our faculty — active members of the theater community across the country — will mentor you and guide you to important internship and networking opportunities, including at Soho Rep, Playwrights Horizon, Ford's Theater, HBO and more. You will graduate with the training, contacts and confidence you’ll need to flourish in the theater world.
