Overview

The Environmental Architecture programme from Royal College of Art explores how design can engage with the ecological, social and political processes shaping contemporary life. You work across architecture, landscape and urbanism, exploring environmental and urban challenges through design-action research, studio practice and fieldwork. The programme considers questions of climate adaptation, environmental justice, stewardship, community-led planning, resource extraction and sustainable forms of urbanisation, while examining how emerging technologies are reshaping design and everyday life. Through interdisciplinary and collaborative practice, you develop your own position within an expanding field of spatial practice and explore how design can contribute to more just and environmentally responsive futures.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

Term 1

In Term 1, you take Design-Action Studio 1: Spatial Investigations, developing ways of reading and representing complex sites and systems through spatial investigation and design experimentation.

Term 2

In Term 2, you take Design-Action Studio 2: Spatial Propositions, moving from investigation towards proposition and exploring how design can engage with environmental and urban change through spatial, institutional and strategic forms of intervention. You also take Seminar II: Strategies and Constellations, developing approaches to environmental and urban design through critical research and strategic thinking.

Term 3

In Term 3, you take the Independent Research Project, developing an ambitious independent project that brings together your interests, methods and position as a designer and researcher.

RCA welcomes applications from individuals from all backgrounds and from all over the world.

RCA alumni come from a wide range of backgrounds and industries, bringing diverse experiences including those unrelated to art, which enrich the creative community and drive fresh perspectives.

As part of your application, you may need to submit:
A portfolio showcasing your work and artistic vision.
A personal statement (around 300 words) describing your interests, motivations, and future goals.
An introduction video (maximum 2 minutes) to introduce yourself and explain your artistic approach and project ideas.
