Key Features

Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) involves a combination of taught courses and your own dissertation. Throughout the taught courses you'll visit many farms and animal facilities, and study courses in a range of topics, including an introduction to applied animal behaviour and animal welfare, the biology of suffering, and animal cognition and consciousness.You'll also learn about scientific methodology and animal welfare applications, before researching and writing a dissertation project on a related subject of your choice.

Graduates with Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) will:

be able to understand the application of scientific principles to the study of animal behaviour and welfare and utilise effective, modern methods for describing and analysing scientific data.

know how to assess the welfare of animals in captivity and in the natural environment, offer advice on applied animal behaviour and animal welfare issues and understand philosophical debate relating to the use of animals by humans.

have a solid grounding in the global issues that have an impact on animal welfare.

General requirements

Honours degree (first or 2:1), or equivalent in Animal Science, Biology, Psychology, Zoology or Veterinary Science.

Evidence of proficiency in English must be provided by those for whom English is not their first language (IELTS 7.0 or equivalent).

RUC uses UK ENIC (formally UK NARIC) to assess overseas qualifications.

Ideally, applicants should arrange for their own letter of comparability through Ecctis’s Statement of Comparability service.

Those speaking English as a second language should sit an IELTS, TEOFL or Cambridge examination prior to application in order to meet the English Language entry requirements of SRUC's courses.
