The MSc programme in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering at the University of Stavanger, developed in close collaboration with the petroleum industry, is uniquely focused on the blending of geosciences and engineering for the specific needs of petroleum exploration and production.


A graduate of this Petroleum Geosciences Engineering program  at the University of Stavanger will be able to solve geoscientific problems by integrating surface and subsurface data and to integrate such information with petroleum engineers. In addition, they will be able to formulate strategies and will have the key fundamental knowledge to develop, manage, and implement technology. Graduates are qualified for a broad range of positions within the petroleum industry and other industries where both engineering and geosciences are applied.


The programme, which has been developed in close collaboration with the oil industry and the petroleum engineering programme, qualifies for a broad range of positions within the oil industry, both operators and service companies. 

The programme also qualifies for other industry branches or institutes where geosciences are applied, such as construction, geo-environmental, mining, underground water and governmental companies. 

A complete master degree in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering may qualify for admission to the PhD programme in Petroleum technology and geosciences at the University of Stavanger.

            A Bachelor´s degree in Geosciences or equivalent is required:

            Applicants with a Bachelr's degree in geology and/or engineering degrees will also be considered if they document at least 40 ECTS credits in geosciences/geology/geophysics.

            All applicants must have at least 30 ECTS credits in mathematics/statistics/calculus.
