The Student Affairs in Higher Education program of Kutztown University is designed to prepare students for professional careers in student affairs in institutions of higher education.

Overview

Such careers are typically found in one or more of the following areas: admissions, athletics, career services, financial aid, housing and residence life, international student affairs, commuter services, intramurals and recreational sports, judicial services, minority affairs, orientation services, registration and records, student activities, student services, and women's affairs. The Student Affairs in Higher Education program of Kutztown University combines experiences that are practical, specialized, and individual with those that are broad and theoretical. Research skills and an understanding of the relevant literature for the discipline are a part of the program.

This is a forty-two (42) semester hour, two-year graduate program, and requires a final capstone project for degree completion. All courses are three semester hours unless otherwise stated. All students accepted into this program must complete all requirements within six (6) calendar years.

Professional credits students who intend to apply for admission to this program are limited to FOUR courses prior to admission.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Personal and Ethical Foundations: Students will demonstrate, consistent with ACPA, NASPA, and CAS objectives, awareness and understanding of one's values and beliefs as related to professional codes of ethics and principles of personal wellness.
  • Values, Philosophy, and History: Students will demonstrate, consistent with ACPA, NASPA, and CAS objectives, a basic understanding of the values, philosophy and history of the student affairs profession as relevant to professional practice in the field.
  • Assessment, Evaluation, and Research: Students will demonstrate, consistent with ACPA, NASPA, and CAS objectives, an understanding and ability to design, conduct, critique, and utilize various AER methodologies and the results from them to inform professional practice.
  • Law, Policy, and Governance: Students will demonstrate, consistent with ACPA, NASPA, and CAS objectives, an understanding of policy development processes used in various contexts; the application of legal constructs, compliance/policy issues; and governance structures and their impact upon professional practice.
  • Organizational and Human Resources: Students will demonstrate, consistent with ACPA, NASPA, and CAS objectives, an understanding of the scale, scope, and interactivity of the human and organizational resources involved in the professional practice of student affairs within the context of higher education.

  • 3 professional and/or academic letters of recommendation written within the last 3 years.  Acceptable professional references would be from a current or former: Professor, colleague/co-worker, supervisor. If you have graduated within the last three years, you must provide AT LEAST one ACADEMIC reference. 
  • Bachelor degree transcripts received (3.0 GPA) or a Master's level transcript with a 3.0 or better.
  • One-page typed resume of employment and education history.
