The University of Strathclyde Business School’s MSc in Finance - Oman programme is now being offered in Oman on a distance learning basis in collaboration with College of Banking and Financial Studies.


This MSc in Finance - Oman at The University of Strathclyde is suitable for those intending to develop their careers in finance, broadly defined as corporate finance, security analysis, portfolio management, the management of options, futures and other derivatives, treasury management, the management of financial institutions and markets, and financial decision-taking in the public sector.

For those already working in finance, the course will enhance their effectiveness by covering the latest developments in the field, encouraging them to question traditional rules and techniques and take an analytical approach to practical problems and decision taking.

How does the programme work?

This course has been taught for more than forty years, though it has been reviewed and restructured over this period. It was one of the first MSc. degrees in Finance to be offered in the UK and it continues to be highly ranked in the Financial Times league tables and graduates from the programme are employed in nearly all the major international financial institutions. The programme is has been taught on a part time/open learning basis for almost twenty years, and staff of Strathclyde are well experienced in teaching on this basis.

How long will it take?

The course will be taught on a part time basis over two years, with the next intake in September 2015. It will cover the same syllabus as the course provided at the University of Strathclyde and students in Oman will take the same examinations as those on the full time course

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • an Honours degree (2.1 preferred) or equivalent, in accounting, economics, business studies or a subject area with a strong quantitative bias. The programme requires no prior knowledge of finance
  • applicants in Oman will be judged on an equivalent basis
  • for students whose first language is not English, an IELTS of 6.5 (with no one section below 5.5) will also be required.
