The Specialization in Food Security - Assessment and Action taught at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is an extension of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Distance Learning courses in Food Security Information for Decision Making, developed with funding from the European Union.


As a starting point, the participants in the Food Security - Assessment and Action taught at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) will examine the relationship between food security and vulnerability, hunger, malnutrition and poverty. Subsequently, they will focus on the guidelines for interpreting and using the necessary conceptual frameworks for analysing food security. 

Other topics of study are the approach to assessing different types of information systems related with the analysis of food security; the design, preparation and increased influence of reports about food security in different contexts; and the most commonly used methods for assessing food availability on a regional, national and local level.


  • Define food security as a broad concept used to determine people's general well-being.
  • Understand the concept of vulnerability and how it is applied to food security.
  • Appreciate the importance of food security analysis to trigger appropriate action to address food insecurity.
  • Understand the need for identifying the underlying causes and characteristics of food insecurity.
  • Understand the basic measures to monitor and evaluate targeting activities.
  • Acknowledge food security as a policy issue cutting across different sectors.

  • The UOC is an open university which means that even if you do not have a high school diploma or university degree you can still take our courses.
  • Regardless of your prior education, the certificate is transferable to the Master's in Food, Society and International Food Governance.
