About

The School of Media and Performing Arts has a thriving postgraduate research culture. We offer opportunities in the areas of Film and Media, Drama and Performance, Creative Writing, and Digital Storytelling.

Our recent doctoral graduates of this Film, Media and Performing Arts at University of Portsmouth have worked on innovative projects and produced groundbreaking research. We have enabled them to present their work at international conferences, to publish their findings in scholarly journals during their period of study, and to build important academic and industry connections via our established UK networks.

Many of our PhD students have had the opportunity to work at academic and commercial archives, including the BFI, the National Archives, The Bill Douglas Centre, the BBC Written Archives and at Channel 4. We have an excellent record in supporting oral history research and several of our postgraduates have conducted original interviews as part of their research.

We have enabled our doctoral graduates to go on to publish their research in monographs and edited collections, and they have gained employment in a range of sectors: some work in the Cultural Industries (eg for Creative Skillset); others have been appointed as post-doctoral researchers on AHRC-funded projects; and a number have established successful academic careers both in the UK (eg at Bournemouth and Queens University Belfast) and internationally (eg Hiroshima and Trondheim).

Research Cluster

Film And Media

The Film and Media Research Cluster advances research across the media industries. Work within the cluster applies a wide range of analytic, critical, historical perspectives to the examination of film, music, television, animation, the press, social and digital media, as well as acknowledging the importance of politics, institutions, and audiences in the processes of media production. As a consequence of this research, membership of the cluster is largely drawn from the staff and PhD students located in the School of Media and Performing Arts. However, recognising the interdisciplinary nature of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) and potential crossovers in research interests and expertise, some members are based in other schools in the Faculty such as Art and Design, and Creative Technologies.
