At the Global Health MSc course offered by the University of Southampton you’ll learn:

• the concepts and dimensions of global health
• the issues underpinning health outcomes and inequalities between countries and population sub-groups

The modules you study may be taught by academics from specialisms including social sciences, medicine, the environment, and life sciences.

This degree is available to take as an intercalation degree for undergraduate medical students. Intercalation means that you'll take a year out of your undergraduate medicine degree to gain this extra award.

Career Opportunities

In the context of growing globalisation, migration and rapid social change, a global approach to health has never been more important. Global threats come in many forms, such as the emergence of new infectious diseases, the rising incidence of obesity and the risks posed by climate change. In an increasingly interdependent world these complex problems require solutions that transcend geographic boundaries and draw on international and multidisciplinary collaboration to develop innovative responses.  The MSc offers the opportunity to explore these and many other issues of relevance and develop the skills to analyse and contribute to effective solutions.

A key feature of the MSc is the breadth of optional modules from demography, medicine, economics, geography, gerontology and statistics, which allows students to tailor their programme to individual needs and interests.

The aims of the MSc programme in Global Health are to enable you to :

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of current and emerging transnational issues in population health in the context of rapid globalisation and social change

• Apply an interdisciplinary approach when examining the complex underlying determinants of current global health challenges

• Develop the necessary critical thinking and methodological skills (including quantitative methods) to enable you to analyse global health problems, and identify and evaluate potential responses

• Develop skills to effectively communicate complex global health concepts and issues to a range of audiences

• Explore options for a professional career in global health and international development
