Overview

In the Biomedical Imaging programme of Åbo Akademi University  students will gain an understanding into the theoretical and practical processes of a wide range of biomedical imaging technologies, with a heavy focus on the interdisciplinary nature of the field.

In addition, students are given the opportunity to specialize in targeted areas of biomedical imaging through their choice of minor subject studies. Students will also gain practical experience in working in a research group while doing an internship and writing their master’s thesis. All of these components will provide students with a strong basis for further studies in an academic and professional context.

The courses are given by the two universities in Turku (Åbo Akademi University and University of Turku), with well-equipped laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities. Lecturers and experts from a broad international network of top-ranking experts in imaging will be invited to participate in ongoing workshops, laboratory courses, seminars and symposia.

Career opportunities

Upon successful completion of this programme, our students have gone on to work in a number of diverse roles within the biomedical and scientific sectors. Many of our students have continued to study at PhD level with success in a wide variety of fields ranging from biosciences to dentistry. Additionally, our students have obtained roles as imaging core facility personnel and lab technicians. A small sample of the titles obtained by our students include Multimedia Producer at the Institute of Biomedicine, Euro-BioImaging Node Technician, and Coordinator at Turku BioImaging.

Programme Structure

The programme consists of bridging studies, mandatory and selectable major subject studies, master’s thesis, freely elective and language studies.

These courses cover topics from introductory courses in cell biology and physics, to cell and medical imaging, biomedical instrumentation and image analysis. In this programme, theoretical studies are combined with practical and applied work at competently equipped laboratories.

The studies are done under the close personal guidance of teachers and professors.

Courses included:

  • Introduction to cell biology, laboratory work and biophysics
  • Electron microscopy
  • Cellular imaging and fluorescence in bioanalytical research
  • Biomedical and in vivo imaging
  • Biomedical instrumentation
  • Bioimage informatics
