The MSc in Combustion Engineering at KHT Royal Institute of Technology teaches students how to respond to sustainability issues of engines and increase their performance, by enhancing fuel efficiency and limit exhaust emissions. The Master’s includes courses on thermodynamics, supercharging, combustion, emission formation and control, all of them experimented in laboratories and seminars.


Students learn how to develop internal combustion engines in the context of increasingly stringent emissions legislation.

The Combustion Engineering track from KTH Royal Institute of Technology focuses on sustainability issues, and emphasizes engine performance, including fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions. Thermodynamics, supercharging, combustion, emission formation and emission control are addressed. Traditional lectures as well as exercises, seminars, assignments and laboratory experiments are learning tools in the courses.

Theoretical skills learned in the basic course are combined with a scientific approach and practical experience in the advanced course. Industrially relevant tools and methods are used. The advanced course and the master thesis project are typically arranged in close cooperation with industrial companies - for example Scania, Volvo, consulting companies and sub-contractors specialized in internal combustion engines.

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). Academic Requirements

To be considered eligible for the programme you must fulfil both the general and specific admission requirements. The general admission requirements are the same for all programmes at KTH while the programme specific requirements vary between the programmes.

A Bachelor’s degree, corresponding to 180 ECTS credits, in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, with sufficient theoretical depth and good academic results.

For the application to be considered, the applicant must specify their choice of programme track.

Documented solid knowledge in each of the following track-specific courses - or their equivalent - is required:

Every year a limited number of KTH Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence. Recipients of the KTH Scholarship will have their tuition fee waived for the first and the second year, provided that the study results during the first year are satisfactory.

Applications for the KTH Scholarship for studies beginning in autumn will be open December 1 - January 15.
