Master of Arts program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at The New School offers professional teacher training with a focus on social action and addressing the needs of adult students. U.S. News & World Report listed it among the top online graduate programs in education in the 2013 edition of Best Colleges.

English is the preeminent language of global communications, and demand for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages professionals trained in the best practices of teaching adults is greater than ever. Because teachers learn best by working in the classroom, The 30-credit graduate program in TESOL at The New School connects theory to hands-on practice in your area of specialization — teaching or curriculum development — with guidance from an international faculty that includes renowned authors and ESOL professionals such as Jeremy Harmer and ELTon award winner Scott Thornbury.

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all are motivated to enter a field that lets them work across borders and cultures to help students learn English as a second language or foreign language. Through its progressive, cutting-edge curriculum and vibrant online network of students, faculty, and alumni, the program develops adaptive, reflective practitioners who continue to raise the standards of the English language teaching profession.

Teaching Through Social Action

The TESOL program grapples with issues of major political, social, and cultural concern. Our social action and outreach programs provide opportunities for our students to teach and design curricula for communities in need, including food service workers in New York City, parents in multilingual families, and victims of violence. These programs provide students with invaluable in-class experience, enhance their résumés, and ensure that they see firsthand how learning English can empower and assist underserved communities. Recent projects include teaching English to immigrant parents as part of the Go Project, to women who are victims of violence at Sanctuary for Families, and to immigrant food service workers in collaboration with Eataly and Epicurean Management.

Connected to New York City and the World

Although based in New York City, our MA TESOL program brings together a community of faculty, students, and alumni who live and work in many countries. Our growing alumni base provides students with a vital resource for developing and sharing ideas, discussing issues, and keeping up with a field that is constantly changing.

The MA TESOL program regularly presents public lectures, webinars, and other events that bring noted experts, researchers, writers, and practitioners to The New School. Use the Events calendar to find links to upcoming and archived public programs.

Career Opportunities

Because each TESOL course is informed by the latest research and current issues in the field, students emerge from the program career-ready. Our graduates work for universities and other public and private schools,* international corporations, nonprofits, governments, and NGOs and in private practice in the United States and abroad. They teach English to adults, administering ESOL programs, create new programs, and develop new teaching methods.

*The MA TESOL degree does not by itself certify an individual to teach in public or proprietary schools in New York State.

Applicants for graduate school who are seeking financial aid should notify their prospective academic department early in the application process. Graduate students are automatically considered for university merit-based scholarships and fellowships as part of the admission process. Note however: For U.S. citizens and permanent residents, limited scholarship funds are usually combined with government supported grants and loans in a financial aid package, so applicants must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Graduate students are notified of their scholarship awards soon after their admission in a letter from either their academic program or Student Financial Services.

StudyPortals Tip: Students can search online for independent or external scholarships that can help fund their studies. Check the scholarships to see whether you are eligible to apply. Many scholarships are either merit-based or needs-based.
