About

This Master in Musicology from Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, the only one in Italy with a multilingual approach, trains you to become a specialist in the field of musical heritage and its cultural dissemination.

Overview

Two universities and two curricula, three languages, a precious asset to be preserved and transmitted.

This inter-university MA in Musicology offered by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and the University of Trento, allows you to specialize in two distinct fields:

  • Music Philology,
  • Communicating Music (Musikvermittlung).

The lecturers come from three different cultural and linguistic areas and will guide you along your academic path, introducing you to the world of education, research and transmission of knowledge in the field of music.

Course structure

You will attend the first year of study, common to both curricula and mainly in English, at the Faculty of Education in Brixen-Bressanone. The main subjects are: musical education, music making and music learning, ethnomusicology, paleography and musical philology and cultural anthropology.

The second year, you will have to decide whether to continue in Brixen-Bressanone, with a curriculum in Communicating Music (Musikvermittlung) that focuses on subjects such as history of theatre and performing arts, exegesis of musical sources or pedagogy, or in Trento, with a curriculum in Philology of Music, focused on disciplines such as modern and contemporary composition stylistics, musical dramaturgy, history and criticism of art or codicology.

A wide choice of optional courses will allow you to steer the path towards your interests.

Career opportunities

Graduates can work as experts in the field of music education and its cultural dissemination (for example in concert institutions and in teaching), or in archives and music libraries and in specialized publishing. You might also decide to continue your studies by undertaking a PhD.
