The mission of the Chapman MAT and Single Subject Credential programs are to prepare reflective teacher who use integrated, developmentally appropriate and critical pedagogies and are ready to collaborate within diverse educational communities.
The Master of Arts in Teaching: Teaching Secondary (MAT) program at Chapman University allows the candidate to obtain both the single subject credential and the master’s degree through an integrated program of coursework, fieldwork, and student research.
The Single Subject Credential program is an integrated program of coursework, fieldwork, and student research. This program is targeted to individuals who wish to begin their teaching careers with a credential only.
Program at a Glance
- The Single Subject Credential program is 34 total units.
- The Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Education Program is 40 units (6 units above the credential).
- Cohort model with spring and summer semester start options.
- Four semesters required to complete the MAT program. Those admitted in Summer are in a cohort sequence of Summer/Fall/Spring/Summer. Those admitted in Spring are in a cohort sequence of Spring/Fall/Spring/Summer.
- Small class sizes and low student-to-faculty ratio
- Hands-on, community-based learning connect coursework to student teaching
- Students who already possess a single subject, multiple subject or special subject teaching credential from California or any other U.S. state are not eligible for admission to the MAT: Single Subject Program.
- For the Single Subject Credential Course of Study, you need to meet with your advisor to make a plan.
