The online Master of Education in Instructional Technology program at Sam Houston State University is a combination of courses covering curriculum and instruction and computer science.


The 30 credit hour program is entirely online and designed to provide individuals with the skills to effectively use instructional technology for classroom or professional training. The online masters in Instructional Technology program promotes a strong, working knowledge of digital-age learning environments.

The online Instructional Technology master’s program consists of 30 credit hours, utilizing a variety of methods to provide the most beneficial online learning experience. Coursework exceeds the level of expectations regarding student interaction and usability, and consists of five online Curriculum and Instruction courses and five online Computer Science courses.

The Culminating Research Project for this program allows the candidate to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of an instructional designer. During the last two semesters of the program, candidates research, design, evaluate, and implement an online training course while showing mastery of integrated objectives for both the Computer Science and the Curriculum and Instruction courses. The candidate’s overall experience in this process is captured in the form of a case study and presented in the format of a publishable paper/article, to be submitted to a conference/journal of the candidate’s choosing.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.5
Recommended score: 2.8

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 2.8 or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

    The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

  • For admission to a post-baccalaureate or master’s program, the University requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or 2.8 on your last sixty hours of undergraduate coursework.
  • Submit a TOEFL score of at least 79 (iBt internet-based test) or 6.5 IELTS or successful completion of the English Language Institute (ELI) program at SHSU.
