About

The Special Education program at Oakland University focusing on the broader concepts of exceptionality - learning, instruction and development and an in-depth preparation for one area of exceptionality.

Overview

Exploration of theory and research and advanced application in instruction and assessment with selected populations are integrated throughout the program. All applicants to the ASD, EI, and SLD programs must have a valid Michigan teaching certificate or show eligibility for the teaching certificate.

The Special Education program at Oakland University is designed to provide students advanced training and expertise in a chosen area of concentration (ABA, ASD, EI, or SLD). The ASD, EI, and SLD programs can lead to endorsement for teaching in the specific area of disability study. The ABA program does not lead to an endorsement recognized by the Michigan Department of Education and leads to practice in a clinical or educational setting.

Applied Behavior Analysis Concentration

Research has shown that Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), provided by individuals trained in the principles of behavioral analysis, can help individuals including those with autism to learn specific skills such as how to communicate, develop relationships, play, care for themselves, learn in school, succeed at work, and participate fully and productively in family and community activities, regardless of their age. ABA has a strong database of research to document its effectiveness with positive behavioral changes for a variety of populations.
