Your first 12 months of the Physician Assistant Studies program from University of South Dakota is spent in the classroom on the Vermillion campus. You will learn important medical concepts necessary to succeed. The final 12 months you will gain supervised clinical experience from licensed physicians and physician assistant preceptors in a number of clinical areas from family medicine to surgery to emergency medicine.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Obtain a complete and accurate medical history from multiple types of patients in different types of settings. 
  • Write a complete and accurate medical history from multiple types of patients in different types of settings. 
  • Perform a complete or problem focused physical exam on multiple patient types of patients in different settings. 
  • Clearly and effectively communicate with patients, their families, and other members of the health care team. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structures of the human body and how they function at the physiology level.  
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the epidemiology, etiologies, risk factors, and underlying pathophysiologic process of medical conditions. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of drug absorption, distribution, action, toxicity and elimination.  
  • Construct a list of differential diagnoses to formulate a final diagnosis by interpreting information derived from the history, physical exam, diagnostics, and other patient related information.   
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform common technical procedures. 
  • Demonstrate patient evaluation, monitoring, diagnostic/therapeutics, counseling and appropriate referral skills. 
  • Appraise and critically evaluate medical literature for the benefit of patients. 
  • Discuss the health care delivery system and the role of the physician assistant 
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior and professional conduct.

  • Application Fee: $35.00 U.S.D. The application fee cannot be waived and is nonrefundable.
  • Official Transcripts: If transcripts are not originally provided by the institution in the English language, the indigenous language transcript should be submitted along with an English translation. The full English translation must include a certification from the translator verifying that the translation is complete and accurate and that they are qualified to translate the language to English.
  • Official Admission Test Scores: If test scores are required by a graduate program, students may upload a copy of their score report to their GradCAS application. Full admission will require that an official score report is sent to USD directly from the testing body.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Letters must be submitted directly by the recommenders through GradCAS.
