Geological and Environmental Sciences at Stanford University is closely tied to the other three departments and the interdisciplinary programs within the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. In GS, fields of research and education encompass the entire planet from its deep interior to the surface, throughout the long span of geological time up to the human timescale.

The Department of Geological Sciences (GS) offers Ph.D. and M.S. programs in a wide range of fields, including surface processes, geomorphology, geomechanics, structural & regional geology, tectonics, sedimentary geology & basin analysis, life and planetary evolution, petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy & mineral physics, environmental geology, geochronology & thermochronology, and geostatistics.
