The PGCE Secondary programme is an innovative and intensive nine month course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching in the Secondary sector. You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools on completion of the course.

The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway where you will spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching in two different schools.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Lower Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Lower Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • For all subject areas (except History) a good honours degree (2:2 or above) in a subject related to the subject you wish to teach or, in some exceptional cases, an unrelated degree if you have extensive employment in industry in the relevant subject area;
  • English and maths at GCSE (grade C or above) or equivalent for Secondary;
  • Passes in the government's skills test in literacy and numeracy.
  • NB Applicants for the PGCE Secondary History programme must have a degree class of 2.1 or above.
  • You will need to be committed to becoming the best teacher you can be.
