Overview

About this Degree

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University has been granting degrees since 1931 and has over 4,000 living alumni. All degree programs are ranked within the top 25% nationally.  Both Masters and PhD degrees are offered and are accredited. We are now accepting students into a new Master of Engineering Management (MEM). Auburn University is recognized as a leading large public institution with emphasis in engineering, business, and agriculture. Its library is ranked among the top nationally. The department has about 146 graduate students, with about 66 of those being PhD students. Recent graduate students have been employed by companies such as Intel, Delta Airlines, General Motors, Honda, Accenture, Harris, Siemens, Hyundai and NASA and by universities such as Penn State, Old Dominion University, University of Louisville and University of San Diego.

Look at these links for more information about the ISE graduate degrees, the Graduate School, and the city of Auburn and surrounding area. If you are an international student, look here for additional information.

Many (probably one-half) of our students do not have industrial engineering undergraduate degrees.  We have students from other engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering, as well as students from other technical/science programs such as math degrees.  This topic is addressed under required background on our website.  If students need a few undergraduate classes to bring them up to speed in areas such as operations research, they can take them along with other graduate courses that they do have background for.

In general, applicants must have a current (within 3 years) GRE and the TOEFL/IELTS (for international students).  Minimum TOEFL/IELTS score is 79/6.5.  We don’t have a minimum published requirement for the GRE.  The application fee is $60.00 for domestic students and $70.00 for international students. Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education must be provided.  A minimum GPA score of 2.75 is expected, but higher GPAs are better.  We do not need letters of recommendation, but if you wish to submit them, please use the LOR Module within the main application system.  Please do not send LORs or any other application material by email to the department.  Applications are taken year round and students can begin taking classes in Fall or Spring semester.  Summer semester is not recommended as a good time to start.

As of April 26, 2016, our department does not require that master’s applicants (MS/MISE/MISO) take the GRE if they have an undergraduate degree in engineering from any ABET accredited institution with an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher.  If a master’s student in our program has a curriculum change form approved to add a PhD to his/her program, the GRE is not required.  All external PhD applicants will still be required to take the GRE.

We do offer teaching or research assistantships to highly-sought after students when possible.  This consists basically of a monthly stipend starting at $630.00 (can be more) and a tuition waiver (student only pays about $1200 fees per semester).
