This online graduate program prepares professional educators to work with gifted children and adolescents in elementary and/or secondary school programs. This online graduate program prepares special education teachers to engage in current research-based practices related to acceleration and enrichment programs for these high achieving students.   

About

The WVU Gifted Education Program offers the following options:

  • Masters Degree in Special Education with Certification in Gifted Education Grades 1-12
  • Masters Degree Only in Special Education with area of concentration in Gifted Education
The master’s degree with certification program leads to eligibility for additional endorsement in Gifted Education in West Virginia, which includes students with gifts and talents grades 1-12 (or the equivalent in other states). This program requires prior certification for certification in West Virginia in one of the following areas: early childhood or elementary education; or secondary education on the following content areas: biology, chemistry, English, general science, mathematics, physics, reading education or specialist, and/or social studies. Individuals seeking certification or endorsement in other states or in international areas should consult with local and state agencies about certification requirements that apply specifically to them and confirmation that the WVU program will satisfy those requirements. This program qualifies as an alternative certification program in West Virginia.

Accreditation

WVU is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, while the program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and meets professional standards of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

For admission consideration as a degree-seeking graduate student at WVU, the applicant must:
  • have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
  • meet English Proficiency or request conditional admission and complete an Intensive English Program (IEP) application 
  • meet the criteria established by the degree program to which you apply   be accepted by the academic department
