Overview
The Mathematics master's program at the University of Southern Mississippi is designed for students to develop a working background in mathematics. Moreover, students interested in applied mathematics can build the foundation to continue in a doctoral program in applied and computational mathematics. Thus, the master's program provides flexibility to accommodate a wide range of interests, as well as the opportunity to specialize in applied mathematics.
Central Focus of Our Curricula
Most of our faculty’s work revolves around computational modeling.
- We use numerical methods in Partial Differential Equations, Linear Algebra and Optimization to, for example, measure the efficacy of oil recovery, aid medicine and law enforcement through image enhancement, and improve nanoscale measurement by modeling light diffraction.
- We use Computational Algebra to improve symbolic computation.
- We use Computational Discrete Mathematics to explore the structure of graphs and ordered sets.
