Our department offers both master’s and doctoral degrees with an emphasis in literature or creative writing. Students in the MA program can also select the English education emphasis. The interaction in and out of the classroom among students from a variety of backgrounds and academic interests makes for a lively and dynamic intellectual environment.

About

Offering classes and public forums on craft and criticism, we are proud to highlight the advantages of literary scholars and creative writers studying alongside one another. With approximately eighty active students, our graduate program maintains a lively and robust culture of intellectual and creative activity.

The Department of English and the English Graduate Organization provide, on a competitive basis, support for travel to conferences, and we offer a variety of support for our students’ professional and career development, from panels and seminars to a vigorous job placement program. The Center for Writers maintains a long-running Visiting Writers Series which brings nationally-recognized writers like Peter Orner and Allan Peterson to Hattiesburg.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
