What you'll learn
The English department faculty has special strengths in a large number of areas, including creative writing, American literature, post-colonialism, Native American studies, digital literature, cinema and media studies, queer theory, feminism and women’s studies, visual and scientific rhetoric, and Irish studies, among many others.
The department offers concentrations in Literature and Cultural Theory, Rhetoric, Writing, and Community Engagement, Creative Writing, and Media, Cinema and Digital Studies. Teaching assistantships are available.

General requirements
- Undergraduate major in English or related field, with appropriate background for proposed concentration of study: Plan A, broad background in English and American literature; Plan B, literature, linguistics, and/or composition; Plan C, literature and creative writing; Plan G, professional writing; Plan H, background in media studies, film studies, or digital and/or popular culture.
- Undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale).
- Three letters of recommendation to the Department’s Director of Graduate Studies from persons familiar with applicant’s academic ability and achievement.
- A sample of academic writing.
- For Plan C admission, an applicant must also submit samples of original fiction or poetry.
