Key facts
This dual program Art Education (PreK-Grade 12) at Syracuse University from the School of Education and The College of Visual and Performing Arts provides professional skills and curriculum strategies that are arts-based and principle-centered, promoting community engaged scholarship and problem solving across disciplines. Graduates meet the academic requirements for both initial and professional New York State teacher certification in Visual Arts (all grades).

- Opportunities for community involvement and youth mentorship, including the Saturday Art Workshops for Young People.

- Take part in School of Education short-term study abroad programs around the world. Through the Himan Brown Fellowship, School of Education students are also eligible for exclusive funding to support study abroad experiences.

- Because you will be a student in two different schools within Syracuse University, you will receive advising support and faculty expertise from both the School of Education and the School of Art, including academic advising support, teacher certification, and job search support.

General requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0
- An undergraduate major in art, or a or minimum 30 credits of studio and/or design, art history, and contemporary arts survey courses; additional liberal arts and humanities courses (as determined by department transcript review)
- Official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate study
- A portfolio review (in person, digital, or emailed) of 12-20 images of original work, each captioned with the title, media, description, and date of work
- A personal essay describing the candidate’s beliefs about student learning, commitment to diversity, enthusiasm for learning, willingness to foster collaboration, and ethics
- Letters of recommendation from professors and/or employers
- Interview recommended
- Resume or CV
