The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) at the East Tennessee State University is a flexible, interdisciplinary graduate program that offers students from a variety of backgrounds the opportunity to study across the boundaries of academic disciplines in order to create knowledge from multiple perspectives.

  • A baccalaureate degree in any field from a regionally-accredited institution.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 2.75
  • Three letters of reference from academic or professional (employers or the like) persons who have known the candidate and can evaluate the candidate's ability to complete a graduate degree program.
  • An admissions interview with the MALS director and/or the associate dean for Cross-Disciplinary Studies and selected MALS advisory committee members.
  • A 4-5 page writing sample.  The School of Graduate Studies liaison to MALS will provide directions for the writing sample when the applicant's file is otherwise complete.
