The Teaching - Elementary program at Wayne State University is designed to provide professional preparation for holders of baccalaureate degrees in areas other than education and who seek teacher certification. Students pursue teacher certification while earning credits toward the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.

The master’s degree may be completed after certification, but degree requirements must be completed within 6 years of the time the first course in the program is completed.

The Teaching - Elementary program at Wayne State University may be completed as a full-time or part-time student. The certification portion of the program can be completed in 2 years as a full-time student; however, the Early Childhood and Special Education programs require additional coursework and an additional clinical experience. Most courses are offered in the late afternoon or evening; however, you should be aware that student teaching and other clinical experiences must be completed during the day.

Students may complete requirements for the teaching certificate prior to completing the Master of Arts in Teaching degree. MAT students must complete a minimum of 42 semester credits for teacher certification. Students in the Bilingual-Bicultural, Early Childhood, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Special Education programs have additional coursework.
